After Infiniti pulled the wraps off a series of new products at the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, we can report the 2011 G25 is fact, not fiction.

The G25 Sedan makes use of a 218-horsepower, DOHC 2.5-liter V-6. Although this engine is technically a newcomer to North America, it’s hardly an all-new offering, let alone in the G’s engine bay. Derived from the same VQ engine family as the G37′s 3.7-liter V-6, this particular VQ25HR mill was sold in Japanese-spec G cars (aka Nissan Skylines) since 2006. Like the G37 sedan, the 2.5-liter will be mated with Infiniti’s seven-speed automatic transmission, and with the exception of the available all-wheel-drive G25x, send its power to the rear wheels.

The G25′s stateside arrival coincides with Infiniti’s desire to broaden both its portfolio and the G lineup itself. While the G37, G37S, and the new G37 IPL models cater to those searching for a sporty luxury car, the G25 moves in the opposite direction. According to Ben Poore, vice-president of Infiniti North America, the new model targets luxury buyers who’re buying cars primarily for style and substance — not flat-out acceleration or cornering grip.

Buyers won’t sacrifice for the lower sticker price; apart from the smaller V-6, the G25′s model range and content levels are virtually identical to those of the G37. Base G25 sedans sport leather seating, power front seats, automatic climate control, a premium six-speaker audio system, 17-inch aluminum wheels, and high-intensity discharge headlamps as standard equipment. The G25 Journey model adds a rear-view camera, heated front seats, automatic headlamp controls, and a dual-zone climate control system, while the G25X tops that with all-wheel-drive.

2010 Infiniti G37 sports a sweet V-6
USA Today recently did an article on the new G37 and gave it a great review.

If the day ever comes when the sackcloth-and-ashes ethic has us scooting about in enclosed golf carts with lawn mower engines or electric motors, Nissan’s V-6 will be among the most-mourned casualties of the aggressive downsizing underway in the industry.

Widely used by Nissan and its Infiniti luxury line, the engine is sheer driving delight. You could put the V-6, its displacement now boosted to 3.7 liters from 3.5, into a dilapidated Yugo (redundant?) and wind up with a car more delightful than disappointing.

With joy, we report that a junkyard Yugo is not this week’s target. It is the revised, freshened, updated, tweaked — pick your industry jargon adjective — 2010 Infiniti G37 sedan.

While it doesn’t represent Infiniti’s latest thinking — the bigger M sedan, redesigned for 2011, does (and the 2011 will be featured in a future Test Drive) — the G hardly seems aged.

The spiffed-up G sedan and the sleeker two-door coupe went on sale in December. A convertible — sort of Infiniti’s take on the Nissan 370Z sports car — hit the market in February. Limited-production anniversary editions, marking the brand’s 40th year, are just arriving at dealers.

Changes for 2010 common to all the Gs: updated navigation system, instrument cluster, console, wood trim (now polished instead of matte). Specific to the G sedan: new schnoz and rump. The 3.7-liter V-6 went into the car in the 2009 model year. It’s a sweet engine. Aurally: grumble morphing into growl, becoming a roar as your right foot gets heavier. Dynamically: ummm, nice, transforming into yippee and thence to holy mother of all that’s good and pure, as your right sole hits the floor. Appealing at all speeds in all conditions. No need, as parents of yore said disparagingly, to “ram around” to enjoy. The boost to 3.7 liters brings horsepower up to 328 from 306 and adds an undetectable 1 pound-foot of torque, now 269. The change also boosts how fast you have to rev the engine to get those numbers. The seven-speed automatic mated to the 3.7 has more acceleration-oriented ratios in the lower gears, so responsiveness improves. And it has a more relaxed top gear for better highway mileage. Unfortunately, the seven-speed from time to time seemed a bit busy. Not hunting for the right gear. Rather, little motions and sensations giving the impression that lots of activity was occurring just to keep you at the desired speed in the desired gear. The vague busyness of the seven-speed was barely a bother, but the driving enthusiast drawn to the G in the first place would be the type to notice. Upshifts, especially under hard throttle, were swift, crisp and otherwise commendable. Downshifts, too. And the automatic will blip the throttle for you to make downshifts smooth, not jerky, just as you’d blip the gas driving a manual. Let’s just decide right here, right now: Seven speeds is too many, and eight is silly. Six, well executed, is the Goldilocks/Baby Bear number: just right.

The test car, a G37x (“x” meaning all-wheel drive) with more option packages than you might want, showed that Infiniti hasn’t compromised the snappy braking and crisp cornering that keep it among top-tier sports sedans. Steering was responsive but lacked perfect road feel. The AWD system was sure-footed in heavy rain and didn’t seem to detract from the car’s precise cornering, which AWD’s extra weight and power split sometimes can do.

And that back seat is unsuitable for long-legged or robust riders. Put somebody back there to see, don’t just eyeball it and guess. Subtle appeal: relative simplicity. No car really is simple nowadays, but G manages to avoid the type of needless complexity of BMW’s iDrive and copy-cat multilayered control systems. You can operate most G features without a guide and interpreter.

Honorable mention for the automatic transmission’s manual-shift mode. You want to stay in manual mode, yank the gearshift sideways, then tap forward or back to shift. You want to use manual only briefly — say in a tight corner when a downshift helps control the car — just finger-pull the steering-column shift paddle. Instant response. No need to move the gearshift lever first. After a few moments without using the paddles, the transmission reverts to conventional automatic operation. Will you prefer the G to, say, a BMW 3 Series or equivalent? Depends on your prejudices. But the G test car was immensely satisfying, a seeming no-brainer for buyers looking at that size and price range.

The 2010 version of Infiniti's lead-in sports model for Europe remains just as potent, poised and well equipped as before, but benefits from enhancements that bring it into line with other Infiniti models as well as responding to feedback from Infiniti owners.

A more dynamic look and revised interior, with state-of-the-art infotainment technology available, take the Infiniti G37 Sedan into a new decade with more presence and quality than ever. The 2010 version of Infiniti’s lead-in sports model for Europe remains just as potent, poised and well equipped as before, but benefits from enhancements that bring it into line with other Infiniti models as well as responding to feedback from Infiniti owners.

The changes are subtle but effective – as one glance at the sharper new front-end styling reveals. More sculptural, more distinctive and more indicative of the 320 PS (316 bhp) under the bonnet of every Infiniti G37, the new look moves the Sedan visually closer to its sportier two-door cousin, the Infiniti G37 Coupé.

New front light clusters – still with bi-Xenon adaptive cornering headlights as standard – and a fresh-looking iteration of the familiar double-arch Infiniti grille are the main component changes, proving the rightness of the original design. A redesigned under-bumper section with recessed, wide-set foglights (previously the fogs were set into the main light clusters) gives the 2010 G37 Sedan a more purposeful edge to its already striking visual impact.

The rest of the Infiniti G37 Sedan’s body is untouched. Which is good news for fans of its trademark long bonnet, raked-back A pillars and athletic stance that projects power and grace in equal measure.

Changes in the cabin are just as subtle but equally tailored to meeting owners’ expectations. For instance, the Rosewood interior accents are now high gloss, the leather hues slightly lighter and there’s the option of a new a new Wheat leather colour combined with a black dashboard and upper door trims. Reinforcing the Infiniti G37′s impression of quality is a new aluminium trim design, reminiscent of Japanese calligraphy, along with a redesigned centre console based on that in the EX and FX crossovers. Improving both legibility and design cohesiveness, the gauges and LCD instrument display now use white as background colour.

For the first time, Infiniti’s much-praised information and entertainment platform, Connectiviti, is available in the Sedan following on from its debut in the Infiniti G37 Convertible earlier in 2009.

Notable for its all-embracing functionality and user-friendliness, the HDD (hard disk drive) based system connects all manner of modern technology, from MP3 players to mobile phones, with seamless efficiency. Connectiviti+ takes things a stage further with a 30GB Music Box and innovative satellite navigation system which, among its long list of functions, can even access built-in Michelin’s Red and Green Guides to take you to the door of a top restaurant or hotel.

Three new exterior colours are available for 2010 models: Smokey Quartz, Graphite Shadow and Vibrant Red. All are Scratch-shield paint, of course. Other features unique to the Infiniti G37 Sedan are its charismatic V6 with VVEL valve technology and its chassis options of rear-wheel drive, four-wheel drive and four-wheel steer for the most sporting S version.

US News & World Report

The 2010 Infiniti G37 ranks 2 out of 15 Upscale Midsize Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 51 published reviews and test drives of the Infiniti G37, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The 2010 Infiniti G37 is an extremely well-rounded car, balancing the comfort of a commuter and the athleticism of a performance car. It’s available as a refined sport sedan, an aggressive coupe or a gorgeous convertible. Reviewers note, however, that its extensive option list can make ordering a G37 an expensive proposition.

There are few more balanced cars than the Infiniti G37. It can be a refined entry-level luxury car, a comfortable place to spend a morning commute and an alternative to the Lexus ES. It can be a sharp-cornering sports car with a snarling V6 that, some reviewers say, makes a beautiful exhaust note and competes with the BMW 3-Series. It is available with high-tech cabin electronics that stack up to those found in an Acura TL. And it does it all with a sense of style, with aluminum trim textured to look like Japanese washi paper and cool blue lighting.

The G is available in three body styles, and each will appeal to a different sort of buyer. The G37 sedan is easy to live with as a family car, or for those who carpool. It offers rear quarters nearly as comfortable as those found in the Lexus ES, and an extraordinary optional stereo. The G37 coupe is more athletic, with balanced handling that, reviewers say, competes with the top of its class. The G37 convertible isn’t the sporty equal of the coupe – the added weight of its three-piece steel roof slows it down and makes it a bit looser in the corners – but reviewers say it is the prettiest hardtop convertible on the market.

Consumer Guide sums up its appeal well — “The G37′s performance, space, and available all-wheel drive make it an excellent alternative to rivals from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, especially with the addition of the hardtop convertible. These virtues, teamed with prices that undercut those rivals, make these Infinitis a must see in this category.”

In base form, the G37 is less expensive than some of its rivals. Shoppers may find, however, that a confusing list of options and packages can quickly inflate that price. Some of these options, like a navigation system with real-time traffic updates or a stereo that is a huge critical hit, may be worthwhile for some buyers. Others may not make sense for many. For instance, four-wheel-steering is available, but reviewers say the G37 is one of the tightest-handling cars in its class with its standard steering, so the upgrade may be a waste of money.

Those who need to travel with adults in the back seat, or with any amount of cargo, will want to concentrate their research on G37 sedans. Reviewers complain that the coupe and convertible editions have small backseats and limited storage, even when compared to other coupes and convertibles.

Other Cars to Consider

Shoppers attracted to the performance of the G37 might want to test drive the BMW 3-Series as well. Available in sedan, coupe and convertible variants, it is the G’s major rival on the track, and is offered at a similar price.

Convertible shoppers might also consider the Lexus IS C. Some reviewers find that its top-down handling is tighter than the Infiniti’s. It also offers a larger trunk.

Infiniti G37: The Details

Both Coupe and Sedan models are available in a dizzying array of trims, including G37, G37 Journey, G37S Sport 6MT, and G37x AWD. Sport and Journey models come with a unique four-wheel active steering system that improves handling. The G37 Convertible comes in a single, rear-wheel drive trim.

“The value story here is that the G37 sedan offers BMW 335i power for BMW 328i money, which is hard to ignore when it’s so close to the 3-series in its driving manners.” – Car and Driver

“It’ll still be priced competitively…but value doesn’t enter the picture. Instead, we’re thinking about how stiff and composed our Infiniti G37 sedan’s chassis feels through the lumpy corners, and how much we like the torque and drama of the 3.7-liter V6. We’re enjoying the drive.” – Edmunds

“The G37 is a great street car that borders on the luxury side of the BMW. The G sacrifices the performance of its predecessor for a more compliant ride, supple interior, great comfort and quietness.” – Road and Track

“Dollar for dollar, it’s hard to choose between the BMW 328i and the G37. My recommendation? Toss a coin or take them both for a test drive.” – BusinessWeek

“The extra weight and laughable trunk space might be a stretch for enthusiasts and weekenders, respectively, but the G37 Convertible’s ability to deliver the majority of the fixed-roof’s strong-suits along with an open-air experience make it the sensible choice.” – Autoblog

Infiniti Lines Up the 2010 G37 Anniversary Edition in Convertible, Sedan and Coupe Variants; To Hit US Road by Mid-April

March 12, 2010, By Sanjeev Ramachandran in Automotive

Christened the 2010 Infiniti G37 Anniversary Edition, the car will hit the US dealerships by the middle of April. The variants on offer will either be in the shape of convertibles, coupes or sedans.

To be offered in hues of Graphite Shadow, the cars as expected will be in limited numbers. So better yours away as soon as the company brings it to the car mart near you. While the coupe and convertible variants will be limited to just 200 units, the company is likely to bring in the sedans with a targeted number of 350. Among these variants a few which would be all-wheel drive models. So, though the numbers are limited, you will have a range of choices to pick from. O the pricing front, Infiniti plans to start sales of the 2010 Infiniti G37 Sedan Anniversary Edition at $43,350. If you would like to go for an allwheel drive version, you may have to shell out an additional $200. Infiniti is also lining up the coupe for $50,550, while the convertible might sport a tag of $54,900.

To be powered by a 3.7-liter V6 engine married to a seven-speed automatic transmission, the new cars will come lined in aluminium trim. Aluminum alloy wheels , a brand new front spoiler and completely redone side sills would be added specialties, particularly for the sedans which are slightly big in number. The coupe and the convertible too will sport these features. Additional features for the coupe and the sedan would the presence of a new rear spoiler.

Infiniti G37

The G sedan, which joins our list for the fourth straight year, is one of the highest-rated sedans we’ve tested, with a score of 95 out of 100. It provides an appealing combination of agile handling, blistering acceleration, a refined powertrain, a fairly comfortable ride, and a high-quality, luxurious interior. The G37 is as inviting to drive on a twisty road as it is on the highway. But compromises include a snug cabin and small trunk. Rear-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is optional. Coupe and convertible versions are also available. Price: $37,225.
