The 2010 Infiniti G37 Convertible has been getting some attention over the past few months and is now available for sale at Grubbs Infiniti. Come by and test drive one today… here is a short video to give you a closer look.

Drop the Top

And the top is the story of this car. Less than 30 seconds is all it takes to transform what is basically a G37 hardtop (no B-pillar or fixed side glass) into a wide-mouth convertible. Just push the button on the center console and hold. All the work is done by a team of electric motors that hum while they work, peeling back the car’s roof from the windshield header, splitting it into three evenly sized pieces and stacking it clamshell-style in the car’s trunk.

It’s a true marvel of engineering, with countless hinges, double-hinges and pulleys, but unlike Lexus, which does its retractable hardtop for the SC 430 in house, Nissan has had its system engineered in Germany by Karmann. It uses steel roof panels and is installed on a sub-assembly line at Nissan’s plant in Tochigi, Japan, the same facility that produces the G37 coupe and sedan.

But there’s more to the G’s transformation from coupe to convertible than just the roof and its complex mechanism. Infiniti reinforced the car’s A-pillar, door sills and overall body structure. Oh, and dual pop-up anti-rollover bars deploy if the machine’s big brain thinks it’s heading for the upside-down. According to Larry Dominique, Nissan North America’s vice president of product planning, the active roll bars were an aesthetic choice: “They kept us from having to put in an ugly hoop brace.”

The Infiniti G37 Convertible and IS 250C earned “Very Good” overall road-test scores of 77, slightly beating the Audi A5 convertible, which earned a test score of 74. All three convertibles beat other competitors including the previously tested Volkswagen Eos (78) and BMW 328i (76) .

“The G37 has many of the qualities CR’s testers like in the sedan configuration. The IS 250 should satisfy those looking for a refined and easygoing convertible, making both of them good choices,” said David Champion, senior director of Consumer Reports’ Auto Test Center in East Haddam, Connecticut.

In the convertibles tested, Consumer Reports only gave the Miata a “Recommended” rating since it said it doesn’t have sufficient reliability data on the IS 250C, A5, G37 Convertible, and Cooper S Convertible.

Tom Holcomb of Irving, Texas was identified as the very first customer to purchase a G Convertible from Grubbs Infiniti. Holcomb purchased a Premier Edition, which was previewed and first offered through Bloomingdales holiday catalog.

Infiniti G37 Vehicle Highlights
The 2010 Infiniti G37 gets slightly freshened exterior and interior styling. This premium midsize car comes in 2-door coupe and 4-door sedan versions along with a 2-door convertible with a power-retractable hardtop (see separate report). Trim levels include the rear-wheel-drive G37 Base, G37 Journey, G37S Sport 6MT, and all-wheel-drive G37x. All have a 3.7-liter V6 engine that produces 330 horsepower in the coupe and 328 in the sedan. The G37S Sport 6MT has a 6-speed manual transmission. All others use a 7-speed automatic. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags.

Available on G37x and G37 Journey models are a sport suspension, performance brakes, and steering-wheel paddle shifters. Adaptive cruise control, a navigation system, and a 9.3-gigabyte hard drive for storing digital-music files are among the optional features. Newly offered on the 2010 G37 is a USB port and a 2-gigabyte hard drive for storing music files on models not equipped with the navigation system.

A new limited edition anniversary version of the Infiniti G series is being offered by the car maker for the US market. Christened the 2010 Infiniti G37 Anniversary Edition, the car will hit the US dealerships by the middle of April. The variants on offer will either be in the shape of convertibles, coupes or sedans.

To be offered in hues of Graphite Shadow, the cars as expected will be in limited numbers. So better yours away as soon as the company brings it to the car mart near you. While the coupe and convertible variants will be limited to just 200 units, the company is likely to bring in the sedans with a targeted number of 350. Among these variants a few which would be all-wheel drive models. So, though the numbers are limited, you will have a range of choices to pick from. O the pricing front, Infiniti plans to start sales of the 2010 Infiniti G37 Sedan Anniversary Edition at $43,350. If you would like to go for an allwheel drive version, you may have to shell out an additional $200. Infiniti is also lining up the coupe for $50,550, while the convertible might sport a tag of $54,900.

To be powered by a 3.7-liter V6 engine married to a seven-speed automatic transmission, the new cars will come lined in aluminium trim. Aluminum alloy wheels , a brand new front spoiler and completely redone side sills would be added specialties, particularly for the sedans which are slightly big in number. The coupe and the convertible too will sport these features. Additional features for the coupe and the sedan would the presence of a new rear spoiler.

How Many?
Three-hundred and fifty sedans, 200 coupes, and 200 convertibles will be built.

Changes for 2010
The G Convertible is refreshed inside for 2010. Enhancements for 2010 include a new, predominantly white color scheme of gauges and LCD instrument display, improving both legibility and cohesiveness of design. There is also a new center console design for 7AT models and he new high gloss Maple accents interior trim available on G Sedan & G Coupe is now available on Convertible as well. Graphite Shadow is added as a new exterior color for 2010.

On G37 Convertible Sport 6MT, contents of the Premium Package are now standard, and power -folding side-view mirrors are now standard on both models. New to the Premium Package for 2010 is a Rear Sonar System. Enhancements to the Navigation Package include enhanced graphics, XM NavWeather with Real-Time weather and 3-day forecast information (in addition to XM NavTraffic). Zagat Survey restaurant reviews, streaming audio via Bluetooth and digital video playback from USB Flash Drive. The Technology Package adds rain-sensing flat blade front wipers and Advanced Climate Control System.

The G’s interior looks great. It has all of the luxury and technological features you would expect from a high line car. Wood trim, leather and a handsome analog dash clock greet you upon arrival.
