The last time the Infiniti G37 Coupe went head-to-head against a competitor in an MT test, it scored an upset victory against the longtime luxury sport coupe champ, the BMW 3 Series. That was approximately three years ago. Since then, the G has received several incremental improvements. So when we found both a 2010 G37 two-door and Cadillac’s new 2011 CTS Coupe in our garage at the same time — similarly equipped, at that — we decided to pit the two against each other in a good-old-fashioned vehicular duel.

The G37, meanwhile, focuses more on the sports aspect. It has sportier seats that feature adjustable bolsters in the back as well as the pad, along with a pad extender. It has column-mounted paddle shifters that feel like they were designed to be there from the start, as opposed to the Cadillac’s steering wheel-mounted “buttons” that come off as an afterthought. It has more power, too. Its 3.7-liter V-6 is good for 330 horsepower, while the Cadillac’s 3.6-liter mill puts out “just” 304 horsepower. (The Cadillac does enjoy a 3 pound-foot advantage in the torque department.) The Infiniti achieves slightly better fuel economy than the Cadillac, but it requires premium while the CTS gulps regular unleaded.

MANAGING EDITOR BOB GRITZINGER: This has to be the next best thing to a BMW 3-series or an Audi A4 on the market today. Assuming you consider either of the German makes the gold standard in this segment, you might want to give some thought to saving a satchel of cash to get nearly the same level of performance in this Infiniti.

The car is true to the Sport moniker, with a tight powertrain and taut suspension that makes it into a road rocket for the regular guy. It feels and drives a lot like a Nissan 370Z, with a back seat and trunk thrown in. The shifter action and clutch take-up are near perfect, while the steering offers good road feel and is dialed in for instant response. The brakes are spectacular, and the suspension supremely manages to keep the car flat on hard corners and balanced even when you have to dump the throttle under hard acceleration.

If there’s a negative, it’s that the engine is far raspier than the precision sewing-machine smoothness of either German competitor (but especially the inline-six BMW), but the Infiniti powertrain gives up nothing in power and responsiveness.

Oh, and the cupholders are right out of some old German product playbook–that is to say, nearly unusable. Leave the coffee at home and just drive.

ART DIRECTOR KEN ROSS: I like the way Infiniti has carried the look of the G35 into the G37 and pushed it a little further. The interior is an upgrade from the G35, being comfortable but with too many controls on the center console. If you owned the car you would get used to it quickly, but half of the knobs and buttons could go away with a better design. One other small annoyance is that the lane-departure warning system should be an option to turn on when you want it; it should not be on by default.

Acceleration is very good; even loaded to the hilt it powers up well. Handling and ride feel is subpar on either the Sport or the Comfort setting. And I disagree with Bob on the steering. I found it unresponsive and slow and noticed lots of body roll when driving with either of those suspension settings on.

Bottom line: The 2010 Infiniti G37x sedan is one of the best entry-level luxury sedans --aesthetically appealing inside and out, excellent road manners, reasonably practical, excellent overall crash safety, reasonably affordable price, somewhat decent mileage.

Living in Texas, we may not have a high need for an all-wheel drive vehicle but we do get some bad weather every now and then and having a vehicle that has all wheel drive makes driving a lot easier. I came across this article from the Washington Post that gave some good information regarding the 2010 Infiniti G37x Sedan.

Ride, acceleration, handling: It gets excellent marks in all three.

Head-turning quotient: It’s graceful, elegant and seductive.

Body style/layout: The Infiniti G37 is a front-engine, mid-size, entry-level luxury car available as a sedan, coupe or convertible. The sedan and coupe are available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

Engine/transmission: The G37x comes standard with a 3.7-liter, 24-valve V-6 that delivers 328 horsepower at 7,000 revolutions per minute and 269 foot-pounds of torque at 5,200 rpm. The engine is attached to a seven-speed transmission that can be shifted automatically or manually.

Capacities: There are seats for five people, four of whom can sit comfortably. Maximum luggage capacity is 14 cubic feet. Fuel capacity is 20 gallons of recommended premium “for best performance.”

Mileage: I actually got 26 miles per gallon (1 mpg better than the government-rated 25 mpg) in steady highway driving. But stop-and-go city driving was 16 mpg (2 mpg lower than the government’s rating).

Safety: Standard equipment includes front and rear ventilated disc brakes, four-wheel antilock brake protection, emergency braking assistance to better modulate braking pressure wheel-to-wheel in emergency stops, electronic stability and traction control, side and head air bags, rear child safety seat anchors.

Price: The base price on the 2010 Infiniti G37x sport sedan is $36,050. Dealer’s invoice price on that model is $33,305. Price as tested is $43,715, including $6,800 in options (power sliding glass roof; premium Bose sound system with all of the requisite iPod, iPad and related hookups; navigation with rear backup camera; parking collision proximity warning system, intelligent cruise control and much more) and an $865 destination charge. Dealer’s price as tested is $40,060.

The 2010 Infiniti G37 is an extremely well-rounded car, balancing the comfort of a commuter and the athleticism of a performance car. It’s available as a refined sport sedan, an aggressive coupe or a gorgeous convertible. Reviewers note, however, that its extensive option list can make ordering a G37 an expensive proposition.

There are few more balanced cars than the Infiniti G37. It can be a refined entry-level luxury car, a comfortable place to spend a morning commute and an alternative to the Lexus ES. It can be a sharp-cornering sports car with a snarling V6 that, some reviewers say, makes a beautiful exhaust note and competes with the BMW 3-Series. It is available with high-tech cabin electronics that stack up to those found in an Acura TL. And it does it all with a sense of style, with aluminum trim textured to look like Japanese washi paper and cool blue lighting.

The G is available in three body styles, and each will appeal to a different sort of buyer. The G37 sedan is easy to live with as a family car, or for those who carpool. It offers rear quarters nearly as comfortable as those found in the Lexus ES, and an extraordinary optional stereo. The G37 coupe is more athletic, with balanced handling that, reviewers say, competes with the top of its class. The G37 convertible isn’t the sporty equal of the coupe – the added weight of its three-piece steel roof slows it down and makes it a bit looser in the corners – but reviewers say it is the prettiest hardtop convertible on the market.

Consumer Guide sums up its appeal well — “The G37′s performance, space, and available all-wheel drive make it an excellent alternative to rivals from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, especially with the addition of the hardtop convertible. These virtues, teamed with prices that undercut those rivals, make these Infinitis a must see in this category.”

In base form, the G37 is less expensive than some of its rivals. Shoppers may find, however, that a confusing list of options and packages can quickly inflate that price. Some of these options, like a navigation system with real-time traffic updates or a stereo that is a huge critical hit, may be worthwhile for some buyers. Others may not make sense for many. For instance, four-wheel-steering is available, but reviewers say the G37 is one of the tightest-handling cars in its class with its standard steering, so the upgrade may be a waste of money.

Those who need to travel with adults in the back seat, or with any amount of cargo, will want to concentrate their research on G37 sedans. Reviewers complain that the coupe and convertible editions have small backseats and limited storage, even when compared to other coupes and convertibles.

Other Cars to Consider

Shoppers attracted to the performance of the G37 might want to test drive the BMW 3-Series as well. Available in sedan, coupe and convertible variants, it is the G’s major rival on the track, and is offered at a similar price.

Convertible shoppers might also consider the Lexus IS C. Some reviewers find that its top-down handling is tighter than the Infiniti’s. It also offers a larger trunk.

Infiniti G37: The Details

Both Coupe and Sedan models are available in a dizzying array of trims, including G37, G37 Journey, G37S Sport 6MT, and G37x AWD. Sport and Journey models come with a unique four-wheel active steering system that improves handling. The G37 Convertible comes in a single, rear-wheel drive trim.

“The value story here is that the G37 sedan offers BMW 335i power for BMW 328i money, which is hard to ignore when it’s so close to the 3-series in its driving manners.” – Car and Driver

“It’ll still be priced competitively…but value doesn’t enter the picture. Instead, we’re thinking about how stiff and composed our Infiniti G37 sedan’s chassis feels through the lumpy corners, and how much we like the torque and drama of the 3.7-liter V6. We’re enjoying the drive.” – Edmunds

“The G37 is a great street car that borders on the luxury side of the BMW. The G sacrifices the performance of its predecessor for a more compliant ride, supple interior, great comfort and quietness.” – Road and Track

“Dollar for dollar, it’s hard to choose between the BMW 328i and the G37. My recommendation? Toss a coin or take them both for a test drive.” – BusinessWeek

“The extra weight and laughable trunk space might be a stretch for enthusiasts and weekenders, respectively, but the G37 Convertible’s ability to deliver the majority of the fixed-roof’s strong-suits along with an open-air experience make it the sensible choice.” – Autoblog

For 2009, the basics of the G37 coupe stay the same with two major upgrades coming down the pipe. For the first time since the G-coupe rolled off the assembly line it will be offered with Infiniti’s intelligent ATESSA E-TSÔ (Advanced Total Traction Engineering System for All Electronic Torque Split) all-wheel drive system. ATESSA E-TSÔ uses an advanced torque split control strategy which transfers optimum torque to the wheels according to road and driving conditions resulting in outstanding handling due to optimum torque distributionfrom front to rear (50:50 up to 0:100). It also provides high starting traction performance and smooth and stable acceleration with a 50:50 torque split when launching from standing start. Additionally, the automatic 5-speed transmission is upgraded to a new 7-speed unit. The new 7AT should allow for quicker performance and reaction times while also having the capability of slightly increasing estimated miles per gallon.

The sedan steps up in 2009, to the same VQ37VHR motor as the G37 coupe. Receiving a name change, the new G37 sedan will step up to 328hp and will receive the same 7-speed automatic transmission offered in the G37 coupe. Furthermore, the sedan will be available with sport brakes using 4-piston front/2-piston rear calipers and large 14-inch front and 13.8-inch rear rotors. To top off the upgrades,a new sport 18-inch wheel design will be offered along with Infiniti’s Scratch Shield paint which uses a new technology in which a scratch-resistant resin is applied to the paint in order to allow it to “self heal”. Dependent on the depth and the outside temperature, scratches may repair themselves within a week’s timeframe.
